Walkers

East Berkshire Ramblers' Group
The Ramblers' Association promotes rambling, protects right of way, campaigns for access to open country and defends the beauty of the countryside.

We welcome visitors on our walks but after two or three walks ask you to join the Rambler's Association. As well as a regular program of walks varying in length from 4 - 12  miles, we publish local walks guides, organize coach connected walks and long distance walks in stages.

This website is open to all members of East Berks RA. to add items of interest to other members. Description of events, and (digital) pictures if possible, are very welcome.
Comments on the running of the group are also welcome.  You can of course criticise anything you like, but remember your opinion is yours and may not be shared by others! Also the law has decided that publishing on the internet defamatory material is libellous, even though transitory!

Please send your contributions to me, Shirley Morgan, your Webmaster at: shirley@eastberksramblers.org

Contact Information - emails will be forwarded to the relevant person.  Please post orders for Books and maps to the PO Box not to the webmaster.

LATEST NEWS  (updated 27th June)

News from our Local Shows follows below the messages

The Photo Gallery has been updated with the latest photos. These are of the lovely walk that Don & Jean Todd led through Southend Common & Stonor Park. It was much appreciated that they came out and led this walk despite their current ailments. We wish Jean a good recovery following her knee operation done since the walk. The photos are a mixture of some of mine and those sent in by Peter London.

Peter has also sent me pictures taken on the walk that some of you did from the coach trip to Rochester. These are now included in the Photo Gallery. This is what Peter has to say about the walk:

" Margaret Welsford expertly led a group of 14 walkers along part of the North Downs Way into Rochester.  As the photos show, the sun shone, the views were excellent and the walking most enjoyable. Those who hurried into
Rochester on the coach missed a treat - thank you Margaret!"

Message from John Vint:
BROWNSEA ISLAND SEPTEMBER 20TH. GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS.
The good news is all seats have been spoken for. The trip is  definitely on, coach booked , ferry booked and the island advised -we are  coming!

The bad news is, I am over booked by four places, which I  have to correct. I intend to pick a date in the near future and all those who  have not paid, their names go into a hat and the first four out will have to be  bumped
and placed on a waiting list. Very sorry and all that, but I cannot think  of a fairer way of doing this. So my message is - get your money to Pat or me  fast.

The fare is £12 payable to the group, £4.90  payable on the day to the ferry direct, the island is free for all NT. members  (you must bring your NT card.) £4.70 for non-members.
Should  be a lovely day, I will organise the weather  nearer the time.
Any queries to me please 01628 661590 or e-mail  jcvint@aol.com

Anne & Arthur Lewis had this to say about the trip to Rochester & Chatham:

Trip to Rochester & Chatham.  Had a lovely day, weather was kind and to add to
the enjoyment of the day there was a Dickens Festival in the town whereby people
were dressed as Dickens characters and there was a procession through the town
lead by the band. (Photos in the Gallery)

I have a message for you from Patrick Crowson regarding his walk in August:

Please use the car park at Neville Hall on the 24th August to park your cars on the day of my walk, as
I've hired the car park for the walk.  Also, it's for our exclusive use, so people must not worry about parking behind, or across anyone else in the car park.

- At the Maidenhead Carnival, a visitor signs the petition. This says:

"We, the undersigned, petition the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead to pursue with vigour the creation (on grounds of safety, amenity, convenience and visitor attraction) the remaining 33 metres of footpath needed to provide a traffic-free route along the riverside from Boulter's Lock to Maidenhead Bridge."

The pictures below show what the petition is about.
The first shows the riverside as it is now, with no public access. The second is an artist's impression of what it could look like, with a public footpath along by the river.
